From the ages of 16 to 19, I was a prolific songwriter. I filled two school notebooks with the scribbled notes of songs and recorded many on my old cassette recorder (pressing the play and record buttons with two fingers at the same time). These sat in the bottom of a drawer and my guitars in the back of a closet for almost 30 years. The last time I performed was in 1981. I played a song I wrote at my wedding. From the ages of 23 to 51 life took over and music was not part of it.
In late 2009, I believe it was a combination of attending a battle of the bands event and overhearing people talking at a funeral about what they were going to do “one day” and I realized that I do not want to leave this world and have all that I created buried in a drawer, never brought to life.
I set out on a personal music project. No illusions of grandeur, no expectations, just the desire to develop and eventually record my music. I set out to pull a group of weekend warriors together to take on this project. I had 4 specific criteria in mind.
- They all had to be vastly superior to me musically;
- They had to be committed to an original music project;
- They had to like my music; and
- They had to have time.
I started out with two “band members” but after 2 months of working with a bass guitarist and a drummer we lost our momentum. We recognized that we needed additional instrumentation. It was late November. 2009 we could not find anyone. The project stalled.
Through the magic of networking I was introduced to Eric Bernard. Eric plays most instruments, is a very talented producer / arranger, and has a home studio.
Fast forward to today. We have finished the two “albums” of previously unrecorded seventies material and now a third album that I am especially proud of, of new material written over the past two years.
Like I said, at this age I have no aspirations of becoming a “star” but…there is material here (and more to come) that I believe deserves to be heard.
